Why there’s no Tagalog on Duolingo

Tagalog for those who don’t know is the Phillipines’ national language. Most people know at least one Filo… we’re everywhere. So you also know how common this language is. But for some odd reason, there is no option for people who want to learn the main language Filipino’s speak on Duolingo. My preferred and probably one of the most popular language learning apps available. Mind you, Duolingo has almost endangered languages available like Hawaiian, Gaelic, Yiddish, etc.; but not this ever so commonly used one. And sure, I could source out a different app or website but that’s beside the point…

I’m convinced that the owner or someone on board that runs the app has something against the Phillipines. Or they’re holding a grudge against someone in their life who happens to be Filo. An ex partner or teacher or someone who has just wronged them. Because there is no other explanation! There are Filipino communities everywhere, Filipino workers EVERYWHERE. It wouldn’t be a hard language course to put together. You’d basically copy and paste most of the Spanish dictionary and half the work is done!

Anyway, if you aren’t learning a language already I highly recommend Duolingo. But you need to get Duolingo Plus [yearly subscription]. Don’t waste your time with the free version with interrupting ads and such, you won’t be consistent and you wont learn anything.

And if someone who knows someone from Duolingo – Please, for the love of myself and the thousands of other complaints on the internet… add Tagalog to your app.

Salamat

*Okay April ’24 update:
Turns out there is also no Thai. I am going to Thailand next month and thought it would be a good idea to learn some basics for the weeks leading up to my trip and I sadly discovered it wasn’t available either. Not cool Duo, not cool. I hope this changes in the future. These are two very common languages and places of travel. Sad time…
