This is probably my favourite theme still to date. It was for my 21st and I drilled into to all my guests coming that they must dress up and so they all did. My sisters, mum and I dressed up as the members from KISS. Luckily from all our years of dancing and my mums attachment to every bit of clothing she ever owned through all the styles and trends which came back again, we had all the random bits and pieces of costumes and clothing to make up our outfits.
I went to a couple thrift shops and got old R&R records and got my cousin to print off all the best rock album covers and decorated them around my house. We left out a few instruments and got some blow up ones as well. I also left out a guitar case for people to put any presents/cards in. My sisters friend made the cake and I asked for the design to be a record player to go with the rest of the deco. I was going through a film picture phase which kind of worked well with the whole grungy sort of vibe to it all and it also captured more in the moment shots like parties from the 90’s, so I was all about that.
I always opt for a DJ at my parties because I love to dance and I like a dance floor with lights and smoke, what can I say. It just creates an atmosphere like no other! I did ask him to chuck in some rock songs every now and again but other than that, it was regular party music.
Although I’ve had many themed party’s prior to this one, this was one where I incorporated decoration, costume and candy table. And this was my new set standard for my house parties.
Oh and because it was for my 21st, I got guitar picks made up for people to take home. One side said “Shakira’s 21st” and only after ordering, receiving and handing out, I noticed through a picture the day after the party that I spelt my own name wrong… classic.
